A Non-Consensual Interview with Matt-T re: Chillwave
Hey y’all. Yesterday I performed an interview with one of the greatest minds of our time, Matt-T. I’m pretty sure he thought we were just making some heavy drunk conversation but I needed to dig deeper into the thoughts behind the man.
Lolz: Is Chillwave the most philosophical kind of music?
Matt: I think so. It’s the most existential.
Lolz: Why do you say that?
Matt: Things happen, but the only reaction is to stay chill about it. I don’t know I’m drunk.
Lolz: Nice. What do you think is more important to Chillwave: beats or lyrics?
Matt: Beats. The Lyrics are secondary. It’s like Death Metal. The lyrics matter somewhat but its more the style and sound.
Lolz: Do you think that says something about Chillwave artists?
Matt: After not smoking for a month, I’m going to be higher than Killamanjaro.
Lolz: lol
Matt: It’s like Animal Collective. The voice is another instrument. The lyrics matter but the tone and afffect are more important.
Lolz: How would you relate that to something else, like if Chillwave was a style of writing? Come to Minneapolis.
Matt: I want to for sure. I would want to visit Hold Steady landmarks. Maybe like Impressionist paintings. Seems chill. I’m making a 2-disc Chillwave mixtape for a bros ezine. Chillwave + Proto-Chillwave.
Lolz: Tell me something else about Chillwave.
Matt: Carles invented the term. And now its a serious word. Which I think is the funniest shit ever.
Lolz: Do you think the world would be better if everyone got a Chillwave album?
Matt: And smoked weed. People are too stressed out about shit. Shit that doesn’t matter. I am too sometimes. I fight it. Hard.
Lolz: Me too.
Matt: I think its because we ‘think’ and ‘question.’ I dunno.
Lolz: So chilling is even more important if you’re smart?
Matt: I think so. Gotta take a break from thinking about things.
Lolz: That’s kind of existentialism.
Matt: Yes! That’s what I was trying to get at.
Lolz: What about dummies?
Matt: They have their own stresses I guess, but seems more ‘basic.’
Lolz: Maybe they don’t deserve Chillwave.
Matt: They have Dave Matthews Band, or something. I’d rather be ‘smart’ and aware of the world than a dumb self-centered idiot though. That’s why I think ‘hipster’ is such a silly insult. Oh, you’re insulting me because I know what’s up? That’s on you.
